A Prayer for Loneliness When You Live Alone

But just because you live alone doesn't mean you have to feel alone.

How do I get over loneliness when living alone?

If you live alone, think about the people in your life that you can reach out to when you feel lonely.

Which friends or family can you text or call? Can you FaceTime someone or schedule a Zoom date with a friend who lives far away?

And if you live alone and feel lonely, think about your neighbors close by that may also be feeling lonely.

Next time you meet someone in the elevator or at the local coffee shop, be brave and strike up conversation.

You never know which neighbors that you could meet that could become friends.

A Prayer for Loneliness When You Live Alone

God, even though I live alone, you are always with me. You are the best roommate I could ask for.

Help me to feel content with you, and help me to meet others who live close by.

Help me to meet the neighbors that will become friends. And show me how to be a loving neighbor to others in return. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Bible Verses for Loneliness - More Prayers for Loneliness

What is a good Bible verse for loneliness?

When you aren’t sure what to pray, declaring and praying God’s Word is so powerful.

When you feel lonely or want to pray over someone that feels lonely, declare these bible verses for loneliness.

Psalm 23:4

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” - Psalm 23:4

Isaiah 41:10

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God;

I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10 ESV

Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you.

He will not leave you or forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV

Zephaniah 3:17

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.

He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing." – Zephaniah 3:17 NIV

1 John 3:1

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!

And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” – 1 John 3:1

What Does the Bible Say About Loneliness?

God did not create us to live this life alone. God knows the importance of community and relationships, and he wants us to feel loved in community.

We see in Genesis 2 how God emphasizes that it is not good for man to be alone.

"The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” – Genesis 2:18 NIV

We also see in Ecclesiastes 4 the importance of finding companionship and community.

“Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts. For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up.

Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm? And if someone overpowers one person, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

And throughout the Bible, especially in 1 John, God calls us to love him and to love others in return.

What does God say about loneliness?

God wants us to feel loved and to be a part of community, not lonely.

But we see many examples in the Bible where people felt lonely.

Examples of Loneliness in the Bible

We don’t see the words loneliness or lonely in the Bible too often, but we see a few examples of loneliness in the Bible based on a person’s prayer and actions to God.

In Psalms 25 and 142, we see that David was lonely as his enemies pursued him and as he hid out in a cave.

“Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.” – Psalm 25:16 NIV

“Look to the right and see: no one stands up for me; there is no refuge for me; no one cares about me.” – Psalm 142:4

And in Genesis 29, we can only imagine how lonely Leah must have felt in her marriage as her husband Jacob loved her sister more who was his other wife.

“When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he enabled her to conceive, but Rachel remained childless.

Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now.” – Genesis 29:31-32

Or how about the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4, can you imagine how lonely she must have felt going out to get water in the middle of the day? She likely did not have many friends that she could talk to since the town considered her an outcast.

And then there is Joseph who spent at least two years in prison after his brothers betrayed him. Can you imagine how lonely and rejected he must have felt?

So we see in these examples that loneliness existed in the Bible, but how should we respond when we feel lonely?

Prayers for Loneliness in the Bible - How to Overcome Loneliness

God tells us in several places in the Bible that he has not abandoned us and that he will never leave us.

God is always with you

In Psalm 23 an Isaiah 41, we see that God is always with us.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” - Psalm 23:4

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10 ESV

God will never leave or abandon you

And in Deuteronomy 31, God tells us that he will not leave or abandon us.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV

When you feel lonely, the most important thing to remember is that God has not abandoned you.

God is with you and he will never leave you.

Even if you feel rejected or betrayed by others, God is always with you and he delights in you.

If you feel lonely and are frustrated with dating, learn how to deal with rejection from a crush.

God sees your heart

Just like it says in Psalm 139, God sees everything you do and he knows every desire on your heart. And you are precious to God.

“God, how precious your thoughts are to me; how vast their sum is! If I counted them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; when I wake up, I am still with you.” – Psalm 139:17-18

And when you feel lonely, the most important thing you can do is to pray.

God tells us to cast all our anxieties and cares to him, because he cares for us.

“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7

God already knows how you feel, but when you cry out to God in prayer, this allows you to feel God’s love and presence.

And when you turn your worries or feelings into prayer, you are able to feel God’s peace as you remind yourself that God is in control.
